Alphabet Lane Athletic Fields

Weston, MA

Project Overview

McKenzie Engineering Group, Inc. (MEG), in conjunction with Larson Associates, provided design and construction phase services for the replacement of three natural turf soccer fields with synthetic turf. The synthetic turf is a combination of sand and rubber infill. The stormwater runoff emanating from the fields are designed to be removed by draining through a perforated backing that holds the slit film polyethylene fibers. Once through the backing, rainfall runoff is collected in a stone base and routed to perforated collection pipes at the edges of the field. The project included the design of an extensive stormwater management system to comply with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Stormwater Management Policy to renovate the runoff and to mitigate peak rates of runoff for all storm events up to the 100-year event to ensure that post-development rates and volumes were less then the pre-development design condition. The design required three new discharge pipes and the renovation of one existing discharge pipe. The design of the system was required to meet the most stringent local standards as it was located within the Town’s Floodplain Overlay District and was tributary to the City of Cambridge’s drinking water supply.
